Back injuries are considered by OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration) as the nation’s #1 workplace safety problem. Back injuries are often very painful, a long-term or lifetime disability, and expensive to diagnose and treat.
Good posture, exercise and eating healthy can help prevent back injuries and help keep the back healthy. In addition, proper lifting and carrying of objects is also very necessary for the health of the back.
In many work situations, objects that are very heavy are lifted and carried by machines such as pallet jacks. However, in the healthcare industry you often have to lift patients or lift, adjust, or carry a heavy object. It is at these times that you run the risk of injuring your back. Never use your back to lift. There are lifting techniques which should be used to lift and carry objects. There are also techniques to use when lifting patients. Proper lifting and carrying will protect your back from injury and pain.
